Getting to know Évelyn

While teaching a workshop at «BTroula Clube de Baile» I sat down for an interview where I share plenty of details about my life.

Artistic background

«La Negra»

Venezuelan journalist, producer, DJ and teacher of salsa and Latin rhythms, based in Barcelona, Spain, where she has been teaching dance since 1997. She specialises in Cuban salsa, Dominican bachata and salsa fused with ragga, dancehall and other urban rhythms with a strong Caribbean influence.

After seven years as a writer and content producer for the newspaper La Vanguardia Digital, she went on to become Content Director and to design the editorial structure of Revista Salseros. She currently runs the country’s leading digital magazine on salsa and Latin rhythms, www.lanegrasalsa.com

La Negra has managed to combine intellectual work with teaching, producing events and staging shows in the salsa and Latin nightlife scene of her adopted city, as well as at festivals and congresses in Spain and abroad.

She created the prestigious Barcelona International Salsa Free Steps Championship in 2010 — the first of its kind in the world — organises the Marina D’Or Salsa Congress and, more recently, «La Negra Salsa Festival», and advises other major events.

She currently teaches regular classes in Barcelona and in Ibiza, and is both a teacher and a member of the resident DJ team at Barcelona’s most important salsa venue, Antilla Latin Club, where she runs the La Negra Salsa Sunday session. In summer she directs and DJs the salsa session at the celebrated Cala Bassa Beach Club in Ibiza, and throughout the year she works at national and international congresses as an instructor and DJ.

As a host, «La Negra» is considered one of the very best for her creativity, charisma and drive; as a teacher, she has found the balance between meticulous instruction and the fun, joy and genuinely Caribbean flavour of the dance.
