Class I — History
(2h, theory)
– The meanings of the word bachata.
– The forerunners: rhythms that gave rise to and influenced bachata.
– The origins of bachata as a musical genre and as a dance.
Class II — Musicality
(2h, theory)
– Basic standard musical language (pulse, rhythm, bar, tempo).
– Why rhythmic patterns matter.
– The instruments of bachata: their origin and how to recognise them.
Class III — Taking the basic step apart
(2h, practice)
– Differences between authentic, modern and sensual bachata.
– The ingredients of a style: footwork and counting, body movement in bachata.
Class IV — Combinations and variations of the basic step
(2h, practice)
– How many basic steps do you actually know?
– Linear, square and diagonal systems.
– Basic steps and their musicality.
– The patín as an ornamental resource.
– Step sequences.
Class V — Rules for partner dancing
(2h + 1, theory and practice)
– Dancing as a couple.
– Arms and leading: why they matter.
– Competition «Dominicana» versus social dancing.
– The leading figures of Dominican bachata.

Schedule

One important note
This is not a qualification that turns you into a teacher. If you are taking the course, it is because you already are one.
The diploma is a specific Certificate of Completion, awarded for passing the theoretical and practical training programme with a high mark.
